This book was based on my M.I.T. Ph.D. thesis. I have used in my macroeconometric modeling the concept of excess labor developed in this book and the models of the demand for workers and for hours paid per worker that are presented. See in particular Chapter 9 in 1971#5, page 11 in 1974#5, Chapter 5 in 1976#1, Chapters 3 and 4 in 1984#2, and Chapters 2, 3, 5, and 6 in 1994#2. Some of the macro implications of this work are also discussed in 1985#1.

I have used some of the data collected for this book in my work on production decisions and inventory investment. See 1971#1 and 1989#2.
